After several years of the Faslane peace camp maintaining not much more than just a token presence, the campers have decided to start a drive towards bringing it back to life in time for the thirtieth anniversary in June.
There have been several small events just with friends and associates, starting with a communal rebuilding on 1 January and several clean up days. The momentum of progress has been steady and greater than expected, and the camp is now busy and active once more and ready for its first public event: the Spring Greening weekend on 8–10 April .
This (alcohol-free) event should keep the ball rolling and further alarm the Ministry of Defence. The MoD police have been increasing surveillance and intelligence gathering on campers; moreover the police have been questioning activists they arrest anywhere in Scotland about their involvement with the peace camp, whether they have ever helped at the peace camp or know anything of the grand re-opening.
So now is the time to get involved or re-involved. With the current regime of cuts it is even more important than ever to challenge the cost of Trident.
