‘Bless us, Bapu’

Praise Gandhi and pass the ammunition ...

ImageOn 14 March, Britain’s military commander-in-chief David Cameron (ordering drone and air strikes in Syria and Iraq, and authorising arms exports to 18 countries about whom the foreign office has the ‘most serious wide-ranging human rights concerns’) unveiled a nine-foot bronze statue of pacifist icon Mohandas Gandhi. The glorification of the Indian ascetic in Parliament Square in London cost over £1m (the Martin Luther King Jr memorial in Washington DC, USA, cost over £80m). Cameron said of Gandhi: ‘Many of his teachings remain as potent today as when he first said them’. The prime minister added that he hoped that ‘we can all be blessed with the wisdom of Gandhi today, tomorrow and for generations to come’. Photo: Alyvia Covert
